‘Lewes in East Sussex hopes to safeguard its traditions by issuing a local currency. Next month, in the latest sign that localism is a coming force in British everyday life, Lewes will launch its own currency. In doing so, it joins a growing list of communities around the world attempting to protect regional economies and preserve the distinctive ‘feel' of towns and villages.’

‘The news agenda is filled with stories of a global credit crunch. Banks are hard up for money and customers are finding it more difficult to get credit. In the Sussex town of Lewes they're devising a plan which could change all of that. They want to print their own local money. The town did have its own pound before but it was last in circulation in 1895.’

On the week of the launch, Lewes was flooded with news film crews from Japan, Korea, Norway, Germany, France and Italy. It was on BBC News SouthEast three evenings running.
It continued to go viral as it was picked up by media of all kinds around the world.
